As we build whole-of-life disciples, together we will see

Gathered Church Impact
Thriving in groups gathered around Jesus

A church thriving in groups gathered around Jesus. A church whose head is Jesus, and whose help is the Holy Spirit. A church that reveals Jesus better together to the world than alone. A church that gathers in life groups and Sunday celebrations experiencing life transformation through the uncompromising truth of God’s Word, their encounters with the Holy Spirit and the tangible love of Jesus through one another. A church that encounters more of Jesus together than alone.

Everyday Impact
Representing Jesus in our everyday moments

A church that believes Christ wants to be in everyone, everywhere and in everything. A church where people are freed from the disease of ME and everyday life becomes opportunities to represent Jesus – where mistakes become opportunities to model Christ-like humility, promotion to model Christ-like servanthood, work to contribute to society, family to pass the baton of faith to the next generation, hobbies to build relationships with those far from Jesus, money to bless and serve those in need. People who are discipled in the every day and people who make disciples in the everyday moments.

Local Impact
Walking alongside stakeholders to transform Clayton

A church that embraces the community of Clayton as our own. We see ourselves becoming a people that walk alongside the community leaders, seeking to make the city better together. A people through whom acceptance is given, hope is re-birthed, restoration discovered and Christ is found. A people who embrace our unique calling to be His light in the most multicultural suburb in one of the most multicultural nations. A people where Jesus has broken down our walls of prejudice so we can build a diverse, multicultural and united church that reflects our community.

Global Impact
Reaching the unreached people groups

A church that welcomes and makes a home for international students, to disciple and send them back globally with a commitment and vision of the Great Commission. A church that focuses on global mission partnerships that empower a disciple-making movement globally among the unreached people groups.

Pioneering new spheres and frontiers for God’s Kingdom

A church whose focus is in making disciples that multiply. A church where leaders equip and members are empowered to change lives by making disciples of Jesus. Chee Seng Fah

Chee Seng Fah
Senior Pastor

Chee was born in Malaysia and his family migrated to Australia in 1988. Clayton Church of Christ has been his spiritual home ever since. Chee completed his degree in dentistry at Melbourne University where he met his late wife, Wei Lyn. They married in 2004 and worked for many years in their chosen fields as a dentist and medical doctor.

Six months into their marriage, Chee was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, but contrary to medical expertise, he was healed by God. Following his recovery from cancer, he discovered his calling into pastoral ministry and has been on staff since 2006 in various capacities. They had two young boys, Judah and Micah, who they dearly love.

In June 2018, his late wife went to be with the Lord after a sudden brain haemorrhage. Since that difficult season, God has brought Eugenia into his life, and they got married in 2021. Chee is a passionate believer in the local church and has a vision to build ‘whole of life’ disciples who integrate their faith and mission into their everyday life including their sphere of work. He is also based part time at Reventure, a faith and work organisation.

Chee enjoys travelling, reading, playing sports (basketball, golf), playing music and spending time with his family and friends.

Stephen Gullery

Business Operations Director
Stephen Gullery
Business Operations Director

Stephen was born in New Zealand; hence the reason you see him dressed in black so often. He moved to Perth in 2004 and it was here that he accepted the Lord as his saviour. A confirmed bachelor, the Lord introduced him to his now wife Christine, a friend in Christ, then a mentor and finally a partner in the Lord.

As a Christian he became the manager of a tertiary level Theological College in WA. In 2014 Stephen and Chriss moved to New Zealand where he also became the CEO of a Chamber of Commerce, worked as a consultant for a growing IT company and also engaged with the NZ Electoral Commission.

When Covid hit and the borders closed, the forced isolation from Chris’s family including grandchildren, had them reassess what was important. When the borders opened in 2021, Stephen and Chriss moved to Victoria. Stephen arrived the day Victoria went back into a prolonged lock-down. During the lock-down period Stephen and Chriss surfed the internet for a church to stream services and found Clayton Church. Stephen commenced working with Clayton Church at the end of October 2022.

Stephen enjoys the odd round of golf, has played rugby and was a rower, both are now spectator events for him. With Chriss they enjoy long walks and hiking scenic areas. The bike is also used to explore areas. Stephen also enjoys photography, mainly scenery and scenic shots with Chriss in them. He also enjoys the arts, theatre and cooking, mainly BBQ’s.

Our history

Clayton Church of Christ has been a fixture in Clayton for over 60 years. Many ministries have served the Clayton community over the past 60 years; this included the Girls’ Brigade and Boys’ Brigade, play group, counseling, craft, youth groups and camps, Zac’s coffee shop bus, the International students ministry, a “Prime Timers” group for seniors, Sunday School, women’s and men’s ministry, English conversation classes and more.

But how did we get to where we are today?

Small beginnings
On 4 February 1951, a small group of believers met in the home of Bill and Vera Munyard at 459 Clayton Road, Clayton. Within six months, numbers had increased and they had outgrown the house so the public hall in the main street of Clayton was hired for meetings. Church meetings were held here each Sunday for the next three years.

Establishing a presence in Clayton
During this time much of the land around Clayton and Clarinda was given over to market gardening. In 1951 the current block of land was purchased to prepare for the church’s expected growth. Volunteers led by Bill Munyard and Don May, built the first Church of Christ in Clayton. The building was first officially dedicated on Saturday 24th April 1954 and Conference President Mr Stan Neighbour and Mr Jim Reid addressed the crowded chapel for the first time. The first Sunday meeting was held running two services with 100 people. 117 students attended the children’s Bible School on that first Sunday. A Bible College student, Doug Holloway was the first pastor and in 1955 he was succeeded by James Reid.

Beyond these four walls
Clayton Church has always been about taking the gospel to the nations. The first missionaries sent from the church were Fred and June Reynolds, who on 8 February 1958, left for the New Hebrides, now known as Vanuatu. The Missions Offering that year was £1061 and the following year it amounted to £1191. In 1959, Ron and Judy Robertson went to Papua New Guinea with Missionary Aviation Fellowship. In March 1963, David Soffe left for Papua New Guinea with the Unevangelised Fields Mission, now known as Pioneers. Shortly after he was joined by Dorothy Tucker and they were married at Balimo on 11 April 1964 where they worked until 1986. Since then more missionaries have gone to Papua New Guinea and also to countries such as Congo, Pakistan, Yemen, Kalimantan, Indonesia, Taiwan and Japan. Over the years, many church members have also given short-term medical, dental, optical and language help in India, Burma, Philippines, China and Cambodia.

Clayton Church today and beyond
In 1957, a hall extension was added to the south of the original building. With the continuing need for more space, a chapel was built in 1975, again with the help of volunteers. In 1991, the original rear hall was removed and rebuilt with all facilities now under one extended roof-line. In 2008 we saw the launch of Vision 2015 (see Our Vision and Values). The existing building, along with the old YACC and 25 Dunstan Street, was demolished in 2009 to prepare for a new building that would be large enough to house God’s ministry in the coming years. In 2012, Clayton Church of Christ opened its new building to an emotional homecoming service. We look forward to becoming the people God has intended us to become, seizing every opportunity to glorify Him, to serve the people of the Clayton community and to fulfil God’s Great Commission to make disciples of all nations.
